Are Red Highlights in Your Future this Fall?
Red is the world’s rarest hair color with only an estimated 2% of the population having the hue from birth. And while natural redheads may be rare, more and more self-made redheads are popping up with the exuberant hue capturing the fancy of modern stylists and fashion icons. This year we’re seeing not only the popularity of red as an overall hair color but also the use of red highlights to add a hint of the bold color to hairdos for the autumn. So, ask yourself (and your stylist) if red highlights are in your hair’s future this fall.
- Red Highlights: There are many benefits to getting red highlights as opposed to an overall red color for your hair. Highlights add depth and dimension with the nuanced use of color (also great for hiding grays), they cause less damage than a complete coloring, the treatment costs less, and highlights require less maintenance and upkeep long term than a full head of color. Red highlights can work for blonds, brunettes, or those with black hair; though you’ll want to consult with your stylist to choose the best shade of red to work with both your hair color and complexion.
- Front Streaks: Another partial coloring technique that really stands out with red is the use of front streaks. In leu of red highlights throughout the hair, front streaks focus the color on the hair around your face and your front hair line. This creates a bold contrast that both draws attention to and frames the face. Like with red highlights the variety of shades to pick from for front streaks is diverse, so always consult with your stylist to help narrow down the color that works best for your look.
- Red Balayage: Red balayage is somewhat similar to red highlights in that it uses a partial application of color throughout the hair to create the look. However, the application process for balayage is much different than highlights, and it’s that difference that gives this hairstyle is unique appearance. With balayage the color is hand painted onto the hair, as opposed to using foil, for a more subtle use of color that has a very natural overall look.
- Red Glosses:
Those who only want to dip their toe in the fiery red hue can indulge in red glosses, a non-permanent treatment that gives users a taste of red hair without any commitment. Unlike traditional hair colors created solely to dye hair, glosses were designed to add shine to hair like a protective outer coating. Now, glosses are also available with tints to add both shine and subtle color. Glosses will wash out in a normal haircare routine after about a month, so, unlike red highlights, balayage, or front streaks there is no permanent commitment to the color.
Once you’ve found your style and your shade, be sure to protect your new red look with products specifically designed for color treated hair. Color can dry out locks, and so a hydrating and nourishing care routine is needed to both strengthen your hair strands and protect your color.
